This is an unapologetic Navy Strength gin, so we’ve turned up the juniper and balanced it out with bold botanicals that include coriander, lavender, licorice root, cinnamon, clove, and citrus.

The flavor is crisp, clean and big; simply enjoy over ice. However, the taste punches through in any cocktail allowing the gin to take center stage; this makes it a perfect selection for classic cocktails like the negroni.

Experimentation is everything; so sip it, mix it, but most of all enjoy it. UpEnd your perception of gin. We say, it’s not where you start, it’s where you EndUp.

The Story of Navy Strength Gin

UpEnd Navy Strength Gin is our first iteration and our flagship gin that pays homage to the history of gin.

Navy Strength Gin has a fascinating story. Dating back to the 18th century, the British Navy would test or “proof” their rations of gin before bringing it aboard and storing the barrels below deck near the gunpowder.

The sailors would mix a small amount of gunpowder with gin and try to ignite it. If it lit, the gin was “proofed.” This confirmed the gin was not diluted and that the gunpowder would still burn if the gin spilled or leaked.

The ABV in which it lights is 57%, so 100 proof in the UK is 57% alcohol by volume. The term transferred to the US but was simplified by doubling the ABV.

Drink with care, choose quality over quantity.

Choose recipe:
Negroni
Ingredients

1 oz UpEnd Navy Strength Gin
1 oz Campari
1 oz Carpano Antica Formula Sweet Vermouth

Method

Pour ingredients in mixing glass with ice, stir gently, and strain over ice in lowball glass.  Garnish with orange peel, flamed if you want to do it right.

The equal part Negroni is a classic gin cocktail.  It was one of the first gin drinks Matt learned from his father and, like him, he prefers a slightly lighter pour on the Vermouth and slightly heavier pour on the gin. The slightly sweeter aspect of Antica Formula adds a nice touch and there are many takes on the traditional Negroni.  Experiment with other amaros or check out Gary Regan’s “The Negroni” cocktail book.
